This is the most essential fortification of Britain: DOVER CASTLE | hidden gems, video, quick official review
WHAT IT IS.
12th century, Norman castle.
WHAT'S SO SPECIAL.
Dover is Britain's closest point to Europe. This is the place to put a castle for a surprise attack from (Henry VIII's nightmare!) the Pope, or France.

The Keep at the centre with the Great Tower is the main course of your visit.
On the opposite side of the cafe is The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment and Queen's Regiment Museum. Here you'll review how Norman England's amateur recruits professionalized during Elizabeth I's reign, followed by waves of campaign against the French and all the way up to WWII and Afghanistan.

HIDDEN GEMS.
Don't miss the medieval tunnels. Go through the castle's northwest gate (photo). Get down the wooden stairs near the wall and the tunnel's entrance is right under.
